Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such medications should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
