Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
