Victims of Catholic Clergy Sex Abuse Express Hope After Encounter with Pope Leo

Individuals who endured abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism after their first meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's decision to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his commitment to addressing the problem.

Global Strict Approach Advocated

The organization is advocating for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This policy has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the institution and revisions to canon law to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American advocate shared they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we aim to collaborate with him," Hickey expressed. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the coalition, which includes survivors and supporters from more than 30 nations, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

They noted the Pope was "tender" about their own story and seemed "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, practical, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is hoping that changes to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled materials that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He seemed engaged in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recently released church-ordered document emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they told the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed optimism for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a relationship and persisting to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the narrative ends - he valued that."
