Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
